Wang Haiyang, born in 1984 in Shandong, China, lives and works between China and Italy. As an artist attuned to the perception of desire, he explores the contradictory relationship between the "inner vision" of the body and the "outer vision" of the everyday world. His works, imbued with mysterious and futuristic tones, maintain a deep connection with Eastern philosophy, where erotic fluidity and the complexity of desires intertwine. A turning point in his practice was his study of snail reproduction, particularly the concept of the love dart, a theme that deeply resonated with the artist.
Snails, by nature hermaphroditic, perfectly embody the worldview that Wang conveys through his works: a reality without gender distinctions, where everything is androgynous. The fascination with the ritual battle of snails to assign a male or female role through the use of cartilaginous darts serves as a metaphor for the tensions and contradictions of human life. However, Wang emphasizes that, although gender fluidity is a central theme in his work, he does not directly paint homosexuality. In his view, homosexuality is just one fragment within the vast array of stories that art can tell. His focus is on more complex and profound aspects of the human body and its expression in the context of contemporary life.
Wang Haiyang earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing in 2008, and since then, he has developed an artistic career that blends Eastern philosophical traditions with a futuristic aesthetic, offering an intimate and at times provocative exploration of the body, desire, and identity.
