Tyler Mitchell

Tyler Mitchell is a New York-based photographer born in 1995, renowned for his innovative approach and unique vision that explores social and identity issues through unconventional imagery, often infused with surreal elements. As a young Black artist, Mitchell represents the culture to which he belongs, celebrating its joy, playfulness, and optimism, and creating an idealized image of a Black utopia where the subjects are young, free, expressive, and full of pride.

In Untitled (Idyllic Space Film Still) (2019), Mitchell continues to explore the concept of a utopian space, capturing a moment of serene contemplation in which the subject appears immersed in a perfect world, free from social and cultural pressures. His photography thus becomes a means to rewrite the visual narrative of Black culture, offering a positive and transformative imaginary.
