Hannah Quinlan & Rosie Hastings

Newcastle, 1991

Artist's biography

Born in 1991 in Newcastle and currently based in London, the two artists Hannah Quinlan & Rosie Hastings graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Goldsmiths, University of London, completing their studies in 2014.

Working together as a duo, the artists express themselves through film, drawing, installation, and performance. Their work explores behaviors, history, politics, and symbols of LGBTQ+ culture within a Western context.

One of their most recognizable stylistic signatures is fresco painting. The subjects they depict typically represent urban scenes, where groups of people are captured in moments that are central to understanding power dynamics, class disparities, and positions of authority. Their work is an ongoing investigation into the relationship between public space, architecture, state infrastructure, gender identity, and sexuality. In Public Affairs 1 (2020), three parallel scenes coexist within the same frame, whose narrative encompasses different facets of the same reality: prejudice, the dominant Westernized gaze, and the daily lives and coexistence of various cultures and communities, all under the watchful eye of the police.
