Marinella Senatore

Artist's biography

Marinella Senatore is an Italian artist and filmmaker, born in 1977 in Cava de’ Tirreni, in the province of Salerno. For years, she has been working around the world. Her works, which include short films, books, drawings, installations, and performances, are characterized by a continuous dialogue between history, culture, and social structures.

At the center of her artistic practice is public participation, which, through forms of protest, theater, oral storytelling, dance, and ceremonies, reflects on the political nature of collective formations.

Her performances address themes such as emancipation, equality, systems of aggregation, and working conditions, envisioning the stage as a social platform.

Participants take on roles such as non-professional screenwriters, costume designers, camera operators, set designers, dancers, and more. The aim is to shift the viewer's position from passive observer to active participant. The artist thus acts as a facilitator of aggregation processes that are negotiated with the participants. The narrative of the experience itself becomes an exchange, passing from voice to voice, story to story, along with the memory of being on set. The community is shaped through music, performance, and protest to generate social change.

In 2013, the artist founded The School of Narrative Dance, a nomadic, free school based on educational systems that promote student emancipation and activate processes of self-cultivation. It is a conceptual and physical space where everyone can express themselves and propose ideas to the community. In the Giuseppe Iannaccone Collection, The School of Narrative Dance: Little Chaos #2 is featured, a photographic shot of the performance conducted in 2013 in Cagliari, which participated in the Quadriennale di Roma 2016/2017.

The spectacularity of the composition and the descriptive quality of the light create a sense of anticipation and strong narrative tension.
